Oblique Photography: an experiential, guided approach of Therapeutic Photography
A variety of experiential methods -Focusing, TAE, Microphenomenology, Creative writing, Physical theatre, Body oriented Gestalt psychotherapy etc- are combined towards manifestation and fruitful handling of personal issues through creative practice.
Based on the philosophy of the implicit, Oblique Photography ™ attempts to help individuals to come closer to their undisclosed concerns, should they establish a substantial relationship to their own presence at the time of shaping the content of a photographic frame.
Using a play therapy logic, practitioners are asked to make spontaneous suggestions, about an issue that intuitively arrives as an urgent choice. What is depicted in their frame somehow aligns with M. Ponty’s belief that our relationship with the world is a constant rehearsal, rather than a fixed, fully grasped condition/identity. Discussing the images produced later on within a group, assist them to better understand those parts which gave shape to their constructed worldviews.
This approach does not only produce a canvas on which sensitive information is portrayed, able to trigger aspects of the individuals who made the art/craft works. It suggests a guided making process, throughout participants are invited to experimentally and imaginatively interact with their images, under the light of «composition’s implicit logic» which had allowed the authors’ own interests to manifest via choices during the shooting.
